5 Helpful Tips for Fresh and Festive Holiday Decor

If you have recently had your home redesigned or if you are in a new home with a different aesthetic, don't forget to update your Christmas decor…

I remember when I was first starting out, I was hired by a lady to install Christmas decorations she already had. I arrived at her home and she was living in a new home in a luxury community. She had out decorations for me to install that looked like they came from Target and the color palette didn't work with the home at all. There is nothing wrong with Target decorations, but they tend to look out of place in a multi-million-dollar home.

Quality Christmas decor is expensive, but if you purchase one item each year, it will be manageable. Plus, less is always more. Start out with a garland or wreath that works with your new decor and then plan for a coordinated tree. It is better to have these three items and nothing else than to have a bunch of decorations that are not working.

Here are 5 tips for curating a collection of Christmas decor that is gorgeous, classic, and can be enjoyed year after year…

1. Pick a Pretty Palette

It is tempting to purchase things from the latest trendy Christmas palette of the year. Don't think trendy, think classic. If you are not into classic red and green, which is iconic, try silver and gold with pops of your main home color or even neutrals for a nature-infused vibe.

2. Mix Up the Materials

Mix a variety of materials. Avoid cheap plastic. Opt for a blend of wood, metal, and glass. On your Christmas tree, blend decorative stems, magnolias, large, medium, and small ornaments, as well as some jeweled ornaments that add sparkle. Oh, and don't forget a gorgeous ribbon.

3. Rely on Reflection

Where are mirrors in your home? Be aware of how they are reflecting light. Placing your garland or tree near a mirror will elevate the sparkle and drama.

4. Invest in a Look that will Last

Our firm sources quality Christmas decorations to our design clients. There are online resources such as Horchow and Frontgate that carry quality Christmas decor. Invest in less versus more.

5. Respect the Rule of 3

There is, what we call, the "rule of 3" in design. Similar items always tend to look best in a set of 3. Your grouping will look even better if installed at various heights. If you decide to add decor in addition to your wreath, garland, and tree, add in moderation and place in prominent areas, such as an entry chest.
