How to Decorate Your Home for Autumn...Without the Clutter

I don't know about you, but fall is my favorite time of year. I think it is because in Texas it gets so darn hot by the end of the summer and just when we think we can't stand it anymore, glorious fall comes our way. Summer has its benefits with all the fantastic swimming locations here in Austin, but autumn will always be my favorite season.

The chill of the air at times will come right through our walls or windows, so making our homes a little cozier can be practical as well as beautiful. Those of you who know me, know I am not a fan of clutter and so cozy by no means should feel cluttered.

Here are a few tips for creating a cozy fall vibe at home that is still full of the relaxing peace of mind that comes with uncluttered spaces…

1. Curate Cozy Pillows & Throws to Prevent Clutter

Many of us feel the urge to layer on the pillows and throws this time of year...which usually results in these items scattered throughout the house, on the floor, or taking up space purely as decoration. Don't get me wrong, I love pillows and throws. Ask any of the husbands in the homes we design.

Instead of adding fall pillows, swap them out for existing ones. Instead of adding a Pinterest-worthy pile of knitted blankets at the end of the bed, pick one that feels like fall and actually use it.

We love to work in textures to our designs such as knit, cashmere, velvet, faux fur, leather and suede. It may be that adding just one fall accent pillow is all that you need.

2. Favor Earthy Fall Colors Without Going Overboard

Spicing up the home with fall colors is one of the oldest tricks in the book, and it is also the easiest way to keep the space clear. Warm, fall colors automatically usher in feelings of coziness. Change out one of the pillows on the entry bench to a fall pillow, do the same for your sofa.

One of the best ways to add a fall feel without cluttering your home is to decorate your front porch. A nice wreath, a few real pumpkins, and a pot of mums will do the trick.

3. Select Warm, Seasonal Scents to Adorn Your Tables

My son came home from college the other day and immediately said, "It smells like home". We always have seasonal candles burning in our home and we especially love the fall and winter scents. This is a way you can add that cozy feel without one bit of clutter. Okay the candle takes up a little space, but one good one on the kitchen counter is safe and all you need. I recommend candles from Bath and Body Works for their quality and strong scent.

We love pumpkin, spice, apple, and hot cocoa smells for the fall and mistletoe, balsam, and cinnamon for Christmas.

4. Add Minimal, Yet Meaningful, Touches of the Outdoors

One of the tricks I love that doesn't cost a thing is to take a walk around my yard or the greenbelt to locate natural fall foliage. It is an easy way to bring in the season without the need to make grand gestures. A simple pine bough, or a clipping from the red-orange tree outside, are enough.

Strategically place items so as not to go overboard with your seasonal decorating. A quality door wreath, a garland on the mantel, and a well decorated table is all you need.

But Wait...What About Last Season’s Decor and Accessories?

Organize your seasonal items in plastic bins with different colored lids such as green for Christmas, yellow for summer, and orange for fall. This is a great way to keep your items dust free and out of the way until you need them. By organizing by color, you will be assured you don't miss a box.

All you need are the few touches I mention and perhaps a bud vase with some rosemary or fall berries in your bathrooms to keep your spaces clutter-free with that cozy fall feel.

Our firm has access to quality seasonal items for many different seasons. We will typically help you install the first season and then leave you to do it on your own, after getting our instruction the first year.

Believe it or not, the Christmas market for 2021 will be in January. If you want to uplevel your fall or Christmas decorations, let us know in December.
