Interior design trends
Interior design is a dynamic field with certain trends fading from the scene annually, or even seasonally. Today, I am taking a look at the design elements that are phasing out of use from 2025 while looking forward to some beautiful trends for 2026.
Enjoy — and let me know if you'd like to see some of these outdated trends in your home updated for the long term.
Farewell to these 2025 trends
Open kitchen shelving: Closed cabinets are easier to maintain and give kitchens a more finished look.
Blonde wood finishes: Add depth with darker, warmer wood finishes on the floor, trim, accent furniture, or anywhere really.
Neutral rugs: Color drenching and patterns bring artful touches to spaces, adding character and personality.
All-white & all-gray rooms: The modern starkness of white and grey are being abandoned for full color rooms that bring joy.
Hello to these 2026 trends
Darker, moodier color palettes: Warm and rich tones create comforting cocoons away from the overstimulation of life.
Maximalism. . . with a purpose: Less chaotic and more layered and personal, maximalism with a purpose combines textures, new with old, and colors to create a truly unique home.
Antique pieces & thrifted treasures: Vintage shopping provides sustainability and adds soul to a space with unique furniture and timeless decor.
Wallpaper, murals & textured treatments: Tapestries and tactile wallpapers are a great way to add depth and personality without lifting a paint brush. Extensive wall murals are also on the rise, making any room a work of art.
Up for debate
Depending on where you get your design information, you might hear that pattern mixing is on its way out, because of how chaotic a space can become.
However, most designers are projecting a rise in layered design elements, which still includes pattern-on-pattern mixing.
My opinion (so glad you asked) is that certain trends may work for certain projects and not for others. Your home is your sanctuary, and if pattern mixing is not to your taste, you can still obtain a beautiful space without it.
Don't "do it" or "not do it" because it's a trend. Do it because you want it. (I can help you figure out the details of how it all would look. Just hit "reply" to get started.)
